Dear Dad --
Three whole years! Wow, it’s hard to believe you have beengone that long. A lot has happened inthose three years….heartbreak, transition, joy, challenge, adventure, victory, loss, gratefulness, fear and love. At every turn, I feel you with me – whetherit be protecting me, comforting me, challenging me or celebrating with me. Selfishly, I still miss you like crazy and wish that you were right here with me, but since this life is just the beginning of the beginning, I find peace in knowing you are having a blast in Heaven.
As is tradition, I’m going to attempt to recap the past year. This year I find myself stuck…how do I put this year into words? And as I type, a favorite Broadway Musical song comes to mind….
Five hundred twenty-five thousand journeys to plan….How do you measure the lifeof a woman or a man? In truths that she learned, or in times that he cried? Inbridges he burned, or the way that she died? It's time now, to sing out tho'the story never ends, let's celebrate a year in the life of friends. Rememberthe love. Measure your life in love.
Well, the past 525,600 minutes have certainly been filled with a lot of love.
Last year, I told you abit about this man named Nathan. I told you that he was funny and smart andincredibly kind. I told you that he loves the Bison, loves picking on me (in agood way, like you used to do) and that he helped me to open my heart again.

Well, he’s still hanging around and he still makes my heart skip a beat when he walks in the room. WhenI’ve over committed myself and begin stressing out about how to get it all done he cansimply grab my hand, tell me to sit down and breathe a bit and suddenlyeverything seems manageable.

Engaged! 4/8/17 |
His proposal in April caught me very off guard. I knew in my heart he was 'the one' but I didn't think he was scheming behind the scenes. He bought the ring on the opening day for baseball and the jewelry store had the Twins game on AND they were actually winning -- so he took that as a positive sign.
Three years ago when I wrote to you, I didn’t think that I’d ever want to/be able to open my heart again. Nate and I have very similar experiences with our first marriages and it's been good for us to be able to process that together. We joke that we should really have met earlier -- between our love for the Bison, similar age range, the small town feel of the FM area and the fact that his aunt and Martha are colleagues in the book industry -- it's a surprise we didn't. And while it would be nice to have a million more memories already made with him, I know that our pasts (good and bad) have led us to this moment. After all, rainbows always come after the rain; you can’t have Easter without Good Friday; and let’s be honest, Christmas doesn’t come without a long, hard journey and waiting patiently in a stable amidst the crap. God's plan is indeed a glorious unfolding.
There will certainly be an empty chair at the wedding, but I know
you will be there, as you are day in and day out. You will indeed be missed, but what hurts me the most is that this wonderful man never got to meet you. He'll never get to experience first hand where I get my short temper from. He'll never get a nickname from you, hear you laugh or see that twinkle in your eye. He'll never get to golf with you, sit next to you at the slot machine or share the Pizza of the Lord or an O'douls with you. He'll never get to see the many ways that you and he are quite similar. But, thankfully, he gets to see you through me. Yes, indeed -- your goodness, wit and temper lives on through the legacy of love you shared with me. I try to do my part to share that love with the world.
I miss you dad. I miss you so much. To the moon and back 300 times. Yes, indeed, Heaven is too far away. One day we will meet again but in the meantime, cheers to the seasons of love in between.
Love,
